A York City Guide

Visit one of the most historical city's in England, with Roman and Viking roots, its steeped in history and its largely well preserved for everyone to see.

Things to do

Explore the York Minster, one of the most charming gothic cathedrals in the world. I would highly recommend you book onto the rooftops tour and explore the parts many don't get to see! Known as the Hidden Minster, it's a great chance to learn more about the history as well as getting the best views over the city. It's worth noting it's probably not for you if you get claustrophobic. Starting from £19.

Ponder along the city's most picturesque streets including the famous 'Shambles'. Known for it's overhanging timber framed buildings, dating back as far as the 13th century, making it one of the oldest streets in York. Check out all the lovely independent shops, and if you're a harry potter fan there's a great selection for you!

JORVIK centre not just for kids! A unique museum and a fascinating way to learn about York's viking past, including the sights, sounds and smells. Journey back 1000 years, and take a seat to discover what your was like. Then take a look at some of the best preserved archeological sites in the UK. Must book! Starting from £12.50.

Take a trip to the National Railway Museum. See trains from throughout history as well as from around the world. Take a look at some iconic old steam trains including royal carriages and then step on board the bullet train. Free!

Walk along the city walls, some of the best preserved medieval walls! Though, many call them the Roman walls very little can be traced back to roman times due to alterations throughout history. You’ll get some great views and it’s a lovely walk round the city. Start at Micklegate, the famous and historical entrance to the city.

Places to Eat

Brew and Brownie

You guessed it, they do brownies! They‘re a must try and if I do say so myself up there with some of the best I’ve tasted. My personal favourite is the bourbon brownie but there’s lots to choose from. It‘s not all just about the brownies either they do a great breakfast / brunch and delicious pancakes as well as good coffee and fresh juices. Get there early other wise you’ll be stuck in a queue (there is a take away two doors down if you’re in a hurry, even then there’s often a queue).

Manion and Co

Manion and Co have 2 cafes one here in York and the other in Helmsley. On visits to both, locals always mention Manion and Co, I’ve got to agree it is delicious, it’s no wonder if high on their recommendations.

Ate O'Clock

Lovely place for tea (dinner). Delicious food in the heart of the city.

Corner Grill House

If you want steak this is place to go, tiny place so book ahead!

Delrio's Restaurant

Situates adjacent to micklegate, in the cellar of lovely period property, it’s a hidden gem. Authentic italian food with a strong Sardinian influence.
